Electrical Engineer Resume Example

An electrical engineering resume that makes your design scope, codes and standards, and licensing status easy to confirm.

By CVCraftHub · Published

Electrical engineering employers read resumes for technical scope: the voltage levels, systems and standards you work with, the software you design in, and whether you hold or are working toward professional licensing. Results such as cost, safety and schedule still matter, and they are what separate strong candidates.

This example is written for a power and building systems engineer based in Canada with seven years of experience. The same structure works for controls, electronics or utility roles; change the technical detail to match your specialty.

Reverse-chronological, one to two pages. Engineers with several substantial projects can use two pages. Put your licensing status in the header or summary, and consider a short Selected Projects section when your job titles do not show the scale of your work. See the two-page resume guide.

Electrical engineer experience bullet point examples

Engineering bullets are strongest when they include scale (voltage, size, budget), the standard or method used, and an outcome such as safety, efficiency, schedule or cost.

  • Designed a 2 MW rooftop solar interconnection, including protection settings approved by the local utility on first submission.
  • Programmed and commissioned PLC controls for 6 packaging lines, reducing changeover time by 22%.
  • Completed arc flash studies for 3 manufacturing plants and led training for 40 maintenance employees on the updated labels.
  • Resolved recurring breaker trips at a data center by identifying a harmonic issue and specifying filters.
  • Prepared construction documents and specifications for a $12 million school renovation delivered on schedule.
  • Mentored 2 co-op students on load calculations, drafting standards and site safety procedures.

Education section guidance

List your accredited engineering degree with the school and graduation year. Include your capstone project only if you graduated in the last few years or it is directly related to the role.

If you studied outside the country where you are applying, you can add a short note about credential assessment when relevant to licensing.

Certifications and licenses for an electrical engineer resume

Professional licensing is often the most important credential for electrical engineers. Show your current status clearly, whether licensed, Engineer in Training or working toward the exam.

  • Professional Engineer (PE in the United States, P.Eng. in Canada)
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam passed
  • LEED Green Associate or LEED AP
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM)

Common electrical engineer resume mistakes

  • Listing every software package. Focus on the design and analysis tools you use regularly and that the employer mentions.
  • Unclear licensing status. Do not imply you are licensed if you are not. State EIT or "PE exam scheduled" accurately.
  • No sense of scale. "Designed electrical systems" could mean anything. Add voltage levels, building size, project value or number of sites.
  • Dense technical paragraphs. Keep bullets short and put the most important technical detail first.

ATS tips for an electrical engineer resume

  • Write standards both as abbreviations and in full where space allows, such as "National Electrical Code (NEC)".
  • Add your license under a clear heading such as Licenses or Certifications.
  • Avoid putting your license or credentials only after your name in a stylized header; repeat them in a section.
  • List software names exactly, such as "AutoCAD Electrical" or "ETAP".
  • Save your resume as a text-based PDF so symbols such as kV and MW remain readable.

Electrical engineer resume FAQ

Should I put P.Eng. or PE after my name?

Yes, if you are licensed. Also list the license in a Licenses or Certifications section with the issuing body so automated systems and reviewers can confirm it.

How technical should an electrical engineer resume be?

Technical enough for an engineering manager to judge your scope, but clear enough for a recruiter. Lead each bullet with the result or the system, then add the technical detail.

Should I include a projects list?

A short Selected Projects section helps consultants and designers show project types and scale. Keep it to the most relevant four to six projects.

Do Canadian and US electrical engineer resumes differ?

The format is similar and photos are not expected in either country. Use the codes, standards and licensing terms of the country where you are applying.
