Mechanical Engineer Resume Example

A mechanical engineering resume that connects your CAD and analysis skills to products that were built, tested and shipped.

By CVCraftHub · Published

Mechanical engineering roles range from product design to manufacturing, HVAC and test engineering. In every case, reviewers look for the same core signals: which design and analysis tools you use, what kind of parts or systems you work on, and measurable outcomes such as cost, weight, reliability or production rate.

This example is for a product design engineer with five years of experience in consumer and industrial equipment. If you work in manufacturing or facilities, emphasize process improvements, uptime and safety instead of new product development.

Reverse-chronological, one page. One page is usually enough for up to about eight years of experience. Lead with your technical skills if the job description is tool-heavy, and add a Projects section for significant design work or student competitions. Read the one-page resume guide for tips on fitting it all in.

Mechanical engineer experience bullet point examples

Engineering results can be measured in cost, weight, cycle time, reliability, test results or schedule. Name the product or system so the reader can picture the work.

  • Redesigned a bracket assembly in sheet metal instead of machined aluminum, cutting unit cost by 42% with no loss in stiffness.
  • Designed and validated a fixture that reduced assembly time for a valve body from 11 to 7 minutes.
  • Led DFMEA sessions for a new actuator, identifying 9 high-risk failure modes that were addressed before tooling release.
  • Reduced product weight by 18% using topology optimization while meeting all load requirements.
  • Implemented a revision-controlled drawing process that reduced supplier quality issues from outdated drawings.
  • Analyzed test data from 200 units to set new torque specifications, eliminating a recurring loosening defect.

Education section guidance

List your accredited mechanical engineering degree, school and graduation date. Recent graduates can add a senior design project and relevant co-op or internship experience.

Student competition teams such as Formula SAE, Baja SAE or robotics can be listed as projects when they show hands-on engineering work.

Certifications and licenses for a mechanical engineer resume

Certifications are optional for most mechanical roles, but CAD and quality credentials can help, and professional licensing matters in some fields such as HVAC and building design.

  • Certified SolidWorks Associate or Professional (CSWA or CSWP)
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or Engineer in Training (EIT)
  • Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt

Common mechanical engineer resume mistakes

  • Only listing software. CAD skills matter, but employers hire you to solve problems. Show what the design achieved.
  • Using internal part numbers or code names. Describe the product in plain terms, such as "commercial dishwasher door assembly".
  • Leaving out manufacturing knowledge. Experience with suppliers, tooling and production launches is valuable. Include it.
  • Too many course projects for experienced candidates. After a few years of work, replace school projects with professional results.

ATS tips for a mechanical engineer resume

  • Use standard headings such as Work Experience, Education, Skills and Certifications.
  • Spell out and abbreviate important terms once, such as "finite element analysis (FEA)".
  • List CAD tools as text, not as software logos.
  • Keep symbols simple; write "GD&T" rather than using special tolerance symbols.
  • Use a single-column template when applying to large manufacturing companies with online portals.

Mechanical engineer resume FAQ

What skills should a mechanical engineer list?

List the CAD tools, analysis methods and manufacturing processes you use and that the job requires. Common examples include SolidWorks, GD&T, FEA, design for manufacturing and root cause analysis.

Should I include my GPA?

Include it only if you graduated recently and it is 3.0 or higher, or if the employer asks for it. Remove it after a few years of work experience.

How do I describe confidential projects?

Describe the type of product and your contribution without naming confidential details. Results can be expressed as percentages instead of exact figures.

Do I need a portfolio as a mechanical engineer?

It is optional, but a short portfolio of drawings or project photos can help for design roles. Only share work you are allowed to show.
