Software Engineer Resume Example

A realistic mid-level software engineer resume, plus summaries, skills and bullet points you can adapt to your own stack and results.

By CVCraftHub · Published

Hiring teams for software roles scan for three things quickly: the languages and systems you work in, what you actually built, and the effect it had on users, reliability or cost. A strong software engineer resume answers all three in the first half of the page.

The example below is written for a mid-level backend or full-stack engineer with about five years of experience. Adjust the stack and the scale of the work to match your own background.

Reverse-chronological, one page for under 8 years of experience. List your most recent role first and keep a short, grouped skills section near the top so recruiters can confirm your stack. Use a two-page resume only when you have substantial senior-level experience. Read the resume format guide for a comparison of layouts.

Software engineer resume summary examples

A software engineer summary should name your main languages or domain, your level of experience and the kind of work you do best. Avoid lists of buzzwords; one concrete strength beats five adjectives.

  • Mid-level backend engineerBackend engineer with 5 years of experience designing Python and Go services for high-traffic web applications. Known for clear API design, thorough testing and improving the reliability of systems I inherit.
  • Full-stack engineerFull-stack engineer who builds React frontends and Node.js APIs end to end. Four years of shipping customer-facing features in small product teams, with a focus on accessibility and performance.
  • Senior engineerSenior software engineer with 10 years of experience leading distributed systems projects, from design reviews to on-call ownership. Experienced mentor who has helped grow two teams from 3 to 9 engineers.
  • Entry-level engineerComputer science graduate with internship experience in Java and TypeScript. Built and deployed three full-stack projects, including a course-planning app used by 400 students.

Group technical skills so a recruiter can confirm your stack at a glance, and list only tools you could discuss confidently in an interview. Mirror the exact names used in the job description, for example "PostgreSQL" rather than "Postgres" if that is what the posting says.

Software engineer experience bullet point examples

Good engineering bullets name the system, your specific contribution and a result: latency, availability, cost, adoption or time saved. If you cannot share exact figures, describe scale ("services used by 300 stores") instead of inventing numbers.

  • Rebuilt the search indexing job in Python, cutting nightly run time from 5 hours to 50 minutes.
  • Introduced feature flags and staged rollouts, reducing rollback-related incidents by half.
  • Wrote the design document and led implementation of a notification service that now sends 2 million messages per week.
  • Raised unit test coverage of the billing module from 38% to 81% before a major refactor.
  • Partnered with product and design to launch an accessible onboarding flow that increased completion by 12%.
  • Resolved a memory leak in a Node.js API that had caused weekly restarts, eliminating the related on-call alerts.

Education section guidance

List your degree, school and graduation year. Experienced engineers can keep this section short and place it after work experience.

If you are self-taught or attended a bootcamp, list the program and move a Projects section above Education so reviewers see what you have built. Relevant coursework is useful only in the first year or two after graduating.

Certifications and licenses for a software engineer resume

Certifications are optional for most software roles, but cloud certifications can help for platform, DevOps and consulting positions. List only current certifications.

  • AWS Certified Developer or Solutions Architect – Associate
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate
  • Google Cloud Professional Cloud Developer
  • Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)

Common software engineer resume mistakes

  • Listing every technology you have touched. A 40-item skills list hides your real strengths. Keep the tools you can discuss in depth and that match the role.
  • Describing duties instead of results. "Worked on the API" says little. Say what you built, for whom, and what changed as a result.
  • Skill bars and ratings. Graphic skill meters are not readable by applicant tracking systems and do not mean much to reviewers. Use plain text.
  • Missing links. Add a GitHub or portfolio link when you have public work worth reviewing, and check that it opens correctly.

ATS tips for a software engineer resume

  • Use standard headings such as Work Experience, Skills, Projects and Education.
  • Write technologies as plain text (for example "Kubernetes"), not only as logos or icons.
  • Include both the spelled-out and short forms of important terms once, such as "continuous integration (CI)".
  • Keep dates in a consistent format and place them on the same line as each job title.
  • Save as a text-based PDF unless the employer asks for a Word document.

Check your draft with the free ATS Resume Checker, which shows your resume completeness and the plain text an applicant tracking system reads.

Software engineer resume FAQ

Should a software engineer resume include a projects section?

Yes, when the projects show skills your job history does not, or when you have less than three years of experience. Keep each project to one or two lines with the technologies used and a link if the code is public.

How long should a software engineer resume be?

One page is usually enough for up to about eight years of experience. Senior and staff engineers with many relevant roles can use two pages, as long as the most important information is on the first page.

Do I need to list every programming language I know?

No. List the languages relevant to the job and those you could use productively in an interview. Older or rarely used languages can be dropped.

Should I add a GitHub link?

Add one if the profile contains work you are happy for a reviewer to read. An empty or outdated profile adds little, so leave it off in that case.
