Data Analyst Resume Example

A data analyst resume that shows the questions you answered, the tools you used and the decisions your analysis changed.

By CVCraftHub · Published

Data analyst hiring managers want evidence that you can turn messy data into a clear answer someone acted on. Tools matter, but the strongest resumes connect each tool to a business question: churn, pricing, inventory, marketing spend or operations.

This example is written for an analyst with about four years of experience in SQL, Python and business intelligence dashboards. If you are moving into analytics from another field, keep the same structure and lead with projects that use real or public datasets.

Reverse-chronological with a skills section near the top. Put a compact, grouped skills section directly under your summary so reviewers can confirm SQL, a scripting language and a BI tool in seconds. Career changers can use a combination format that places analytics projects before older, unrelated roles.

Data analyst experience bullet point examples

Analyst bullets work best when they follow the question, the method and the outcome. Mention the decision that changed, the money or time involved, or who used your work.

Education section guidance

Analytics, statistics, economics, computer science and business degrees are all common. List your degree and graduation year, and add relevant coursework such as statistics or database design only if you graduated recently.

If you learned analytics outside a degree, add a Courses or Certifications section and a Projects section with links to your work.

Certifications and licenses for a data analyst resume

Certifications can help entry-level candidates and career changers show a baseline of skill. Experienced analysts usually rely on their work history instead.

  • Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate
  • Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate
  • Tableau Certified Data Analyst
  • SAS Certified Specialist: Base Programming

Common data analyst resume mistakes

  • Listing tools without results. "Used SQL and Tableau" is a skills list, not an achievement. Say what the analysis answered and what happened next.
  • Too much jargon. Reviewers may not be analysts. Explain results in business terms such as cost, time, revenue or customer impact.
  • Hiding your portfolio. If you have public dashboards or notebooks, put the link in your header and check that it works without a login.
  • Overclaiming statistical methods. Only list techniques such as regression or forecasting if you have used them in real work or a substantial project.

ATS tips for a data analyst resume

  • Spell tool names the way the job posting does, such as "Power BI" or "Microsoft Excel".
  • Keep skills in a plain text list, not in a chart or skill-level graphic.
  • Use a standard heading such as "Skills" or "Technical Skills".
  • Avoid putting key information in text boxes or tables that some systems read out of order.
  • Include the full name of certifications, not only abbreviations.

Data analyst resume FAQ

What should a data analyst put on a resume with no experience?

Lead with education, relevant courses and two or three projects that use real datasets. Describe each project like a job: the question, your method, the tools and the result.

Should I include a link to my portfolio?

Yes, if it contains finished, well-documented work. A short portfolio of two or three strong projects is better than many unfinished notebooks.

Is Python required for data analyst jobs?

Not always. Many roles focus on SQL, Excel and a BI tool. Check the job description and only list Python if you can use it for real analysis.

How do I show impact if I do not know the business result?

Describe who used your work and how often, such as a dashboard used by 45 managers each week, or the time your automation saved.
