Business Analyst Resume Example

A business analyst resume that shows how you gathered requirements, improved processes and helped projects deliver what people actually needed.

By CVCraftHub · Published

Business analysts sit between the people who need a change and the teams who build it. Your resume has to show both sides: that you can run workshops and write clear requirements, and that projects you supported delivered measurable results.

The example below is for a business analyst with six years of experience in insurance and financial services, working with Agile development teams. Swap the industry details for your own and keep the balance of process, documentation and outcomes.

Reverse-chronological, one to two pages. Use one page for up to about seven years of experience. Name the methods and deliverables you own, such as user stories, process maps or acceptance criteria, inside your bullets so reviewers see them in context. The work experience guide shows how to structure each role.

Education section guidance

Degrees in business, information systems, finance or economics are common, but many analysts come from operations or customer-facing roles. List your degree briefly after your experience.

Add business analysis or Agile training in a Courses or Certifications section, especially if you are moving into the role from another job.

Certifications and licenses for a business analyst resume

IIBA and Agile certifications are recognized by many employers and can set you apart for mid-level and senior roles.

  • Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA)
  • Certification of Capability in Business Analysis (CCBA)
  • Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP)
  • PMI Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA)
  • Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO)

Common business analyst resume mistakes

  • Only listing documents you wrote. Requirements are a means, not the goal. Show what the project delivered because the requirements were clear.
  • Vague stakeholder claims. Replace "worked with stakeholders" with who they were and what you achieved together.
  • Ignoring the industry. Domain knowledge matters to employers. Name the systems, regulations or processes you know.
  • Long paragraphs. Break project descriptions into short bullet points that each carry one result.

ATS tips for a business analyst resume

  • Include the job title "Business Analyst" exactly as it appears in the posting if it matches your experience.
  • List methods such as "requirements gathering" and "user acceptance testing" in plain words, not only as acronyms.
  • Use standard section headings such as Work Experience, Skills and Certifications.
  • Write certification names in full with the issuing organization.
  • Keep your resume in a single-column layout if you apply through large online portals.

Business analyst resume FAQ

What is the difference between a business analyst and a data analyst resume?

A business analyst resume focuses on requirements, processes and stakeholders, while a data analyst resume focuses on querying, analysis and reporting. Many roles overlap, so emphasize whichever matches the job description.

Should I include technical skills like SQL?

Yes, if you use them. Many business analyst roles value basic SQL and data analysis, but list them only if you can use them in the job.

Do I need a certification to be a business analyst?

No. Certifications can help, especially for career changers, but experience delivering projects matters more to most employers.

How do I show results if my projects were team efforts?

Describe your specific contribution and then the team outcome, for example: "Led requirements for a redesign that reduced setup time by 60%."
