Business, Finance and Management resume example

Financial Analyst Resume Example

A financial analyst resume that shows the forecasts you built, the variances you explained and the decisions your numbers supported.

By CVCraftHub · Published

Finance leaders hire analysts to answer the same question every month: what is happening to the numbers, and what should we do about it? A strong financial analyst resume shows that you can build a model people trust, explain a variance in plain language and make a recommendation that a budget owner acted on.

This example is written for a financial planning and analysis (FP&A) analyst with about six years of experience at a manufacturer and a regional bank. Analysts in investment, credit or corporate development roles can keep the structure and swap in deal, portfolio or underwriting work.

Reverse-chronological, one page. One page suits most analysts with fewer than ten years of experience. Open each role with the size of the budget or business you supported, then list forecasting, reporting and modeling results. Keep Excel and planning systems in a short, grouped skills list near the top. The one-page resume guide shows how to shorten older roles.

Financial analyst experience bullet point examples

Education section guidance

Finance, accounting and economics are the most common degrees for this role, and many employers also consider business, mathematics or engineering graduates with strong modeling skills. List your degree, school and graduation year, and add a GPA only if you graduated recently and it is strong.

Recent graduates can add coursework such as corporate finance or financial statement analysis, case competitions and modeling projects. If you have an MBA or a master's degree in finance, list it above your bachelor's degree.

Certifications and licenses for a financial analyst resume

Most corporate financial analyst jobs do not require a certification. A credential helps most when it matches your path, such as investment research or management accounting. List only what you have earned, and describe exam progress precisely.

  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), from CFA Institute, most relevant to investment and portfolio roles
  • Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA), from Corporate Finance Institute
  • Certified Management Accountant (CMA), from the Institute of Management Accountants
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), for analysts who move between accounting and FP&A

Common financial analyst resume mistakes

  • Describing reports instead of insight. "Prepared monthly reports" tells a reviewer very little. Say what the report revealed and what the business changed because of it.
  • Leaving out the scale. A forecast for a $5 million department and one for a $500 million company are different jobs. Give the size of the budget, revenue or cost base you worked on.
  • Vague CFA status. Write "CFA Level II Candidate" or "Passed CFA Level I" instead of just "CFA", which suggests you hold the full charter.
  • Sharing confidential figures. If your employer's results are not public, use rounded numbers or percentages rather than exact internal figures.

ATS tips for a financial analyst resume

  • Write "financial planning and analysis" in full once and use "FP&A" elsewhere, because postings use both.
  • Name planning and ERP systems exactly, such as "Adaptive Planning", "Anaplan" or "Oracle NetSuite".
  • List Excel skills specifically, such as "financial modeling" or "pivot tables", instead of only "Microsoft Office".
  • Keep numbers in your bullets as plain text, not in charts or tables.
  • Use "Financial Analyst" or "Senior Financial Analyst" as your headline when it matches your experience.

Financial analyst resume FAQ

What is the difference between a financial analyst and an accountant resume?

An accountant resume focuses on recording and closing the books accurately. A financial analyst resume looks forward: forecasts, budgets, models and the business decisions they supported.

How do I show financial modeling skills on a resume?

Name the type of model, such as a budget, forecast, valuation or business case, what it was used for and the decision it supported. A skills list alone is not enough.

Should I list CFA Level I on my resume?

Yes, if you passed it or are registered for an exam. Write the exact status, such as "Passed CFA Level I" or "CFA Level II Candidate".

Can I include numbers from my current employer?

Use figures that are public or approximate, or describe results as percentages. Never share confidential forecasts, prices or customer data.
