Technology and Engineering resume example

IT Support Specialist Resume Example

An IT support resume that shows how many people you help, how quickly you resolve issues and which problems you fixed for good.

By CVCraftHub · Published

IT support managers hire for two qualities at once: technical problem-solving and patience with people who are frustrated because something stopped working. Your resume should show both, with the number of users you support, the systems you know, your ticket volume and resolution times, and the recurring problems you eliminated.

This example is for an IT support specialist with five years of experience, starting at a college help desk and now supporting a 650-person engineering firm. If you are applying for your first help desk job, use the same layout and lead with certifications, a home lab and customer service experience from other jobs.

Reverse-chronological, one page. One page is enough for most support roles. Put certifications and a grouped list of systems near the top, then open each role with the number of users and locations you support. Entry-level candidates can follow the resume with no experience guide and add a Projects section for lab work.

Skills for an IT support specialist resume

Help desk postings usually list operating systems, Microsoft 365, a ticketing system and directory tools. Put the systems you support every day first, and add networking or scripting skills only at the level you can actually use them.

IT support specialist experience bullet point examples

Help desk bullets are stronger with numbers: users supported, tickets per week, first-contact resolution, satisfaction scores, devices deployed and repeat problems you removed.

  • Reduced average ticket resolution time from 9 hours to 4 by triaging the queue each morning and routing hardware requests to one technician.
  • Automated new-user account setup with a PowerShell script, saving about 20 minutes per new hire.
  • Rolled out multi-factor authentication to 400 users with step-by-step guides and drop-in help sessions.
  • Kept a 4.8 out of 5 average rating on post-ticket surveys over 18 months.
  • Traced recurring Wi-Fi drops in a conference wing to a faulty access point and coordinated the replacement with the network team.
  • Managed an inventory of 60 loaner laptops, ending lost-equipment write-offs.

Education section guidance

An associate or bachelor's degree in IT or computer science helps, but many help desk roles focus on skills and certifications instead. List your degree, relevant coursework or a technical training program if that is your main background.

If you are self-taught, describe your home lab or volunteer IT work in a Projects section: what you built, which systems you used and what you learned.

Certifications and licenses for an IT support specialist resume

Certifications are a common way to show baseline knowledge for IT support, especially for candidates with limited experience. Postings differ in what they ask for, so check each one and list the full certification name.

  • CompTIA A+
  • CompTIA Network+
  • ITIL 4 Foundation, from PeopleCert
  • Google IT Support Professional Certificate
  • Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator Associate, for device management roles

Common IT support specialist resume mistakes

  • Only listing technologies. A long list of systems does not show how well you support people. Add resolution times, satisfaction scores or the problems you solved.
  • Ignoring customer service. Support work is half communication. Show how you explain fixes, train users and keep people updated.
  • Claiming admin skills you do not have. If you reset passwords in Active Directory but have not designed group policies, describe the work accurately. Interviews often include hands-on questions.
  • Burying certifications. For entry-level IT roles, put A+ or similar certifications near the top where a reviewer will see them quickly.

ATS tips for an IT support specialist resume

  • Use both "help desk" and "IT support" if the posting does, because employers use different titles for similar roles.
  • Name your ticketing system, such as "ServiceNow" or "Jira Service Management".
  • Write "Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory)" if postings still use the older name.
  • List certifications by their full names, such as "CompTIA A+" and "ITIL 4 Foundation".
  • Keep the layout single-column with standard section headings.

IT support specialist resume FAQ

What should I put on an IT support resume with no experience?

Lead with certifications, a home lab or volunteer IT work and customer service experience from other jobs. Describe what you set up or fixed and the tools you used.

Is an IT support specialist the same as a help desk technician?

The titles overlap. Help desk roles usually focus on first-contact support, while IT support and desktop support roles may add hands-on device work, account administration and escalations. Use the title that matches your work and the posting.

Should I list soft skills on an IT support resume?

Show them through results instead, such as satisfaction scores, training sessions you ran or guides you wrote. A list of adjectives is easy to skip.

How do I show I am ready for a system administrator role?

Describe the administrative work you already do, such as account management, device policies, patching or scripting, and add a lab project that shows server or cloud skills.
