Two-Page Resume: When It Makes Sense

Two pages are perfectly acceptable when your relevant experience needs the space. The key is that every line on both pages earns its place.

The idea that every resume must fit on one page is outdated. Recruiters are comfortable reading two pages when the content is relevant and well organized. What they dislike is padding.

When a two-page resume makes sense

  • You have roughly 10 or more years of relevant experience
  • You are applying for senior, management or executive roles
  • Your field values technical detail, such as engineering, IT, healthcare or research
  • You have essential certifications, licenses, publications or projects to list
  • The employer or country norms expect more detail, as with many UK and European CVs

If you are early in your career, a one-page resume is usually stronger.

What goes on page one

Many readers decide based on page one alone, so put your strongest material there:

  1. Name and contact details
  2. Professional summary
  3. Key skills or core competencies (optional, useful for technical and hybrid resumes)
  4. Your current and most recent relevant roles

Page two continues with earlier experience, education, certifications and optional sections.

Formatting a two-page resume

  • Fill at least half of page two. A few lines on the second page look accidental.
  • Avoid awkward breaks. A section heading should never sit alone at the bottom of page one, and a job title should stay with its employer and first bullet.
  • Add your name to page two in a small header or at the top, in case pages are separated when printed.
  • Keep formatting consistent across both pages: same fonts, spacing and date style.

The resume builder paginates automatically and keeps headings with their first entry, job titles with employers and degrees with schools, so your page breaks stay clean.

Keeping two pages relevant

  • Give recent roles four to six bullets and older ones one to three
  • Summarize early career roles in an "Earlier experience" section
  • Remove anything that does not support the job you want
  • Do not repeat the same achievement in several places

What about three pages or more?

Outside academia, some government applications and specific technical roles, resumes longer than two pages are rarely needed. Academic CVs listing publications and grants are a different document and follow their own conventions.
